GAUGE: 15 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

HAT
With A, cast on 74 sts.
Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures about 5 1/2 in. (14 cm) from beg, end with a WS (purl) row.
Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, you will be ready to work a RS row.
Shape Crown
Next (Decrease) Row (RS): K8, k2tog, *pm, k2tog, k14, k2tog; rep from * 2 more times, pm, k2tog, k to end - 66 sts rem at end of row.
Next Row (WS): Purl.
Next (Decrease) Row: *K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sm, k2tog; rep from * 3 more times, k to end - 58 sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows until 10 sts rem.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Sew Hat seam.
FINISHING
Weave in ends. |

Perfect pattern for a newbie. Quickly knits up.
I didn't have size 9 needles, so I used size 10 instead. Worked fine and I just knitted the main part of the hat to 5" instead of 5 1/2" so it wouldn't be too long. Came out great and fits close to the head.
