GAUGE:
12 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern st with 2 strands of yarn held tog. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

I really liked this pattern. Like someone else said, I too used a chart to keep track of the rows and where the cables went. Don't be afraid to try this pattern. I used a circular needle a size or two smaller than the regular needle instead of a cable needle. It held all the stitches without fear of them falling off. I made this for my husband in a black tweedy yarn and he loves it.
