12 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern st with 2 strands of yarn held tog.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

9/9 RC (9 over 9 right cross) Slip 9 sts to cable needle and hold at back, k9, then k9 sts from cable needle.

Rock Rose Cabled Scarf Reviewed by Faith Myers on 2012-11-24 *****
Love this pattern. This is my first cable scarf. It knits so fast! I did it with Homespun Painted Desert. It has the same color variations as the model in the photo. It is so soft and warm. It is a good idea to create a chart or spreadsheet to keep track of the rows. I read that using a circular needle instead of the cable needle is better. I wish I thought of that. The cable needle keeps falls out or gets lost in my knitting bag. ziplock bag cured that problem. It anyone says that they don't have time to knit, I knit on the train going to work. I plan to make another one very soon.
