Basic Hat

GAUGE:
8 sts + 10 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
HAT Cast on 38 sts.
Knit 3 rows.
Beginning with a purl row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 21 rows.
Next Row: *K2tog, repeat from * across – 19 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.
Thread tail through remaining sts, pull tightly to gather and knot to secure.
FINISHING Seam Hat.
Weave in ends.
Optional Pom-Pom Following package instructions, make a pom-pom. Tie pom-pom to Hat. Weave in ends.

I made it for my friend, and it fit him well.
What you need to keep in mind is this. It is designed to be a " beanie", or another name would be a " skull cap". It is supposed to fit tightly. So, you don't need to add any stitches to it
