GAUGE:

9 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.

NOTES:

Hat is worked in rnds, from lower edge upwards.

HAT
Cast on 40 sts loosely. Divide sts onto 3 needles. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 1: *K2, p2; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep last rnd until piece measures about 6 in. (15 cm) from beg.
Next Rnd: *K19, kfb; rep from * once more - 42 sts at the end of this rnd.
Continue in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures 9 in. (23 cm) from beg.
Shape Crown

Next Rnd: Knit.

Next Rnd: Knit.

Salt And Pepper Hat Reviewed by Jane Gomes on 2012-12-03 *****
This hat was easy to make and is very good looking. I also made a neck gaiter by repeating the hat ribbing and binding off. Nice and stretchy for tucking in pony tails and fitting any sized head. Will make this one again.
