Salt And Pepper Hat

GAUGE:
9 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.
NOTES:
Hat is worked in rnds, from lower edge upwards.
HAT
Cast on 40 sts loosely. Divide sts onto 3 needles. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts. Rnd 1: *K2, p2; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep last rnd until piece measures about 6 in. (15 cm) from beg. Next Rnd: *K19, kfb; rep from * once more - 42 sts at the end of this rnd.
Continue in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures 9 in. (23 cm) from beg. Shape Crown
Next Rnd: *K5, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 36 sts at the end of this rnd. Next Rnd: Knit. Next Rnd: *K4, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 30 sts at the end of this rnd. Next Rnd: Knit. Next Rnd: *K3, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 24 sts at the end of this rnd. Next Rnd: Knit. Next Rnd: *K2, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 18 sts at the end of this rnd. Next Rnd: Knit. Next Rnd: *K1, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 12 sts at the end of this rnd. Next Rnd: Knit. Next Rnd: *K2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 6 sts at the end of this rnd.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

Salt And Pepper Hat Reviewed by Jacob Diaz on 2012-03-04
My first time knitting a hat and it came out perfect! It's super easy. I used some left over yarn I had from a blanket.
