Loom Double Knit Hat
Lion Brand® Vanna's Choice®
GAUGE:
5 1/2 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) with 1 strand each of A and B held together.
EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL TO THIS PROJECT. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES:
1. Hat is worked with 1 strand each of A and B held together.
2. Follow loom manual instructions for DOUBLE KNITTING for how to cast on, lace the loom, knit, change color, and bind off.
3. Cut a 24 in. (61 cm) length of A to use as the scrap yarn that is placed over the cast on stitches as indicated in the loom manual. This length of A will also be used to gather the top of the Hat and sew the Hat together.
4. The cast on edge will become the top of the Hat.
5. Hat will be longer and narrower than finished measurement as it comes off the loom. Gently pull from the sides to form Hat into shape.
6. One large contrast color peg is placed on one U-shaped piece to hold beginning slip knot at cast on edge Do not knit on contrast color peg.
Loom Configuration
Use the following pieces: (2) 36-hole pieces, (2) 12-hole pieces, (2) 6-hole pieces, (2) U-shaped pieces.
Connect pieces to form a rectangle as follows: 36-hole piece > 12-hole piece > 6-hole piece > U-shaped piece > 36-hole piece > 12-hole piece > 6-hole piece > U-shaped piece.
Insert a large peg into every other hole along one long side of loom - 27 large pegs placed.
Repeat this peg setup on opposite side of loom to work double knitting - 54 large working pegs placed.
Place 1 large contrasting color peg into any hole on one U-shaped piece to hold beginning slip knot.
HAT
With one strand each of A and B held together, beginning with a slip knot on contrast peg, cast onto all 54 working pegs. Refer to loom manual for DOUBLE KNITTING for placing scrap yarn and how to proceed in knitting.
Work in double knitting until piece measures about 11 in. (28 cm) from beginning.
Bind off.
FINISHING
Pull the 24 in. (61 cm) length of A tightly to gather top of Hat. Knot to secure. Thread the same length of A through yarn needle provided with loom, then sew sides of Hat together.
Using the same needle, weave the yarn ends into the fabric of the Hat.
