Loom Knit Simply Cozy Hat

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick®

11 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch in the round (knit every round).
When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

1. The Hat is knit in the round as a tube.
2. The instructions in the loom manual for casting on are the same for both flat knitting and knitting in the round. These instructions are under the heading of SINGLE KNITTING.
3. Always work in a clockwise direction around loom to knit in the round.
4. The contrast color peg marks the beginning of each round.

Loom Configuration
Use the following pieces: (2) 28-hole semi-circle pieces, (2) 6-hole pieces, and (4) 12-hole pieces.

Connect pieces to form an oval as follows: 28-hole semi-circle piece > 6-hole piece > 12-hole piece > 12-hole piece > 28-hole semi-circle piece > 6-hole piece > 12-hole piece > 12-hole piece.

Insert one large contrast color peg anywhere along loom to mark beginning of round. Skip next hole, then insert a large peg into every other hole around entire loom - 58 working pegs placed.

Follow loom manual instructions on SINGLE KNITTING for how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off in the gathered method.
Beginning at contrast color peg, cast onto the 58 pegs.
Round 1: Knit.
Round 2: Purl.
Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 three more times.
Knit every round until piece measures about 11 in. (28 cm) from beginning.
Bind off in the gathered method. Pull yarn tail tightly to gather Hat closed. Knot to secure.

Using yarn needle provided with loom, weave in yarn ends.

Loom Knit Simply Cozy Hat Reviewed by Joseph Hejl on 2012-01-04 *****
Love the hat. Worn past two days with wind chills in the teens. Head stayed warm. Do suggest some modifications to the pattern, though. First off, pattern calls for 58 peg setup (2) 28-semicircles, (2) 6 hole, and (4) 12 hole. My resulting hat (as shown in figures 1&2) is huge. 25 inches around for my 22 1/8 inch head. The pattern claimed it would be around 20 inches. No way. Suggest using only (2) 12 hole sections, not (4). This results in a 46 peg setup and the hat shown in figures 3&4. I knitted the brim very tightly and it came out being around 19 inches inside. Also, the pattern forms the brim by using a knit, purl repeated 3 times. This gives a brim of about 3/4 inches. The picture seems to show a taller brim. I made mine 1 3/4 inches by repeating the knit, purl (6) more times for a total of seven knit, purls, not the four specified in the pattern. The pattern description also calls for making the hat 11 inches long (tall). After making the brim, I knitted for 47 more rows. The best I could measure while the hat was on the frame is about 7 1/2 inches with the brim rolled up as it would be worn. Fits me wonderfully, fully covering ears and coming down to eye brows in front. Again, I knitted the brim very tightly because I didn't want the hat riding up or down, which it does not. The rest of the hat I knitted with normal tension. In my view - good hat, faulty pattern.
