Loom Knit Child's Hat & Scarf

GAUGE: 12 stitches = about 4 in. (10 cm) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES: 1. The instructions provided in the loom manual for casting on are the same for both flat knitting and knitting in the round (when you make a tube). These instructions are listed under the heading of SINGLE KNITTING.
2. Once you've cast on for the Hat, continue knitting in a clockwise direction around loom for single knitting in the round.
3. Once you've cast on for the Scarf, work back and forth in rows.
4. A contrasting color peg is used to mark the beginning of each round for the Hat.
5. Scarf is knit on only one side of the loom. The loom is configured into a rectangle to make it easier to hold.

HAT
Loom Configuration
Use the following pieces: (2) 28-hole semi-circle pieces, (2) 6-hole pieces, (2) 12-hole pieces.
Connect pieces to form an oval as follows: 28-hole semi-circle piece > 12-hole piece > 6-hole piece > 28-hole semi-circle piece > 6-hole piece > 12-hole piece.
Insert one large contrasting color peg anywhere along loom set-up to mark beginning of round. Skip one hole, then insert a large peg into every other hole along each 28-hole semi-circle piece, 12-hole piece, and 6-hole piece - 46 working pegs placed.
Following loom manual instructions for single knitting in the round, and starting at contrast color peg, cast onto every peg.
Round 1: Knit.
Round 2: Purl.
Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until you have completed 60 rounds.
Bind off in the gathered method. Pull tightly to gather top of Hat and knot securely.
SCARF
Loom Configuration
Use the following pieces: (2) 36-hole pieces, (2) U-shaped pieces.
Connect pieces to form a rectangle as follows: 36-hole piece > U-shaped piece > 36-hole piece > U-shaped piece.
Insert 16 large pegs into every other hole along one 36-hole piece beginning with one large contrast color peg on right side - 16 working pegs placed.
Place one small peg in each connecting hole to hold loom together.
Following loom manual instructions for single knitting, cast onto the 16 working pegs.
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures about 60 in. (152 cm) from beginning.
Bind off.
FINISHING
Thread yarn ends into yarn needle provided with loom and weave ends into the fabric of the Hat and Scarf. |
