GAUGE:

9 1/2 sts = 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Rep Row 2 until piece measures 9 in. (23 cm) from beginning. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through sts of last row and pull tightly. Knot to secure.

Organic Green Hat Reviewed by minako aino on 2010-12-26 *
I made this hat, and it was supposed to be a gift for a friend for Christmas. However, I had two problems with it.
The first was that, the way the pattern is written leaves a bit of confusion, since when you follow it, you end up one stitch short every row. This is not clear in the pattern.
The second was that you end up with an oblong-shaped hat, and a big seam down the back of the hat. I was completely dissatified with the look of the hat, ended up destroying it and making a different hat altogether.
