13 sts + 18 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Yo (yarn over) An increase that also creates a small eyelet. In this pattern, the yo is worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. The loop you have created is an increased st and you are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

1. Throw is worked in one piece, in Garter st (k every row) beginning at one corner and working diagonally across to opposite corner.
2. In the first half of the Throw, 1 st is increased on every row; in the second half of the Throw, 1 st is decreased on every row.
3. Yarn overs (yo) create decorative eyelets along the edges of the Throw.

Cast on 5 sts.
Row 1: Knit.
First (Increase) Half of Throw
Row 2:
K3, yo, k2 - 6 sts at the end of this row.
Row 3: K3, yo, k3 - 7 sts at the end of this row.
Row 4: K3, yo, k to end of row - 8 sts at the end of this row.
Rep last row until you have 134 sts on needle.
Second (Decrease) Half of Throw
Next Row (Decrease):
K2, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k to end of row - 133 sts at the end of this row.
Rep last row until 5 sts remain.
Bind off.

Weave in ends.

Garter Stitch Baby Throw Reviewed by Mariza Vandepoll on 2013-06-17 *****
Great blanket to knitt. Fast and easy. The choice of yarn color makes all the difference. Beginners will need to practice their gauge. It needs to be even and consistent otherwise it will show on the finish product. I threaded a ribbon through the eyelets and it looked beautiful. The yarn washed very well. I used Lion Brand Nature's Choice Organic Cotton in Petits Fours.
