GAUGE:

11 half double crochet = 4 in. (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Shaded Colors Afghan Reviewed by Helen DiPietra on 2014-06-13 ****
Even though I am a beginner, I had no doubt that I could easily follow this pattern. However, although I love the Homespun yarn, when I began the project I had a lot of trouble counting stitches and "finding the loops." Since I had already purchased the yarn I decided to make a giant granny square afghan which came out great - really soft - and looks perfect on my brown leather couch.
