9 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - 1 st increased.

Hat is worked in rnds on double-pointed needles, from lower edge up to top.

Cast on 40 sts loosely. Divide sts onto 3 needles. Place marker for beginning of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle, being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 1: *K2, p2, rep from * around.
Rep Rnd 1 until piece measures about 5 1/2 in. (14 cm) from beg.
Next Rnd: *K19, k in front and then back of next st (increase made), rep from * once – 42 sts at the end of this rnd. Continue in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures 9 in. (23 cm) from beg.
Shape Crown
Next Rnd:
*K5, k2tog, rep from * around – 36 sts.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Next Rnd: *K4, k2tog, rep from * around – 30 sts.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Next Rnd: *K3, k2tog, rep from * around – 24 sts.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Next Rnd: *K2, k2tog, rep from * around – 18 sts.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Next Rnd: *K1, k2tog, rep from * around – 12 sts.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Next Rnd: K2tog around – 6 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and gather tightly together. Fasten off.

Following package directions, make a medium size pompom. Tie pompom to top of Hat.

Everyday Hat Reviewed by Mey-Ling Brizuela on 2011-01-08 *****
I was able to make this hat in a day. I made everything as per the instructions and found it just a little big. Will begin crown at just over 8 inches next time. I did have to restart once as I had trouble losing stitches off the ends of the needles so I decided to divide stitches onto 4 needles (which even helped the k2, p2 rib pattern flow better) and breezed right through. I really loved the hometown yarn used in this project, both the color and the texture. Looks great! Even went with the pom-pom.
