GAUGE:

25 sts + 32 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Stripe Pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto left needle.
Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.
ssk (slip, slip, knit)Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.

PATTERN STITCH
Stripe Pattern
Note:
The Stripe Pattern uses 2 strands of yarn held tog to create denser 'stripes' and 1 strand of yarn to create semi-sheer 'stripes'.

Row 2: Purl.
Rows 3-12: Rep Rows 1 and 2 five more times.

Row 14: Purl.
Rows 15-18: Rep Rows 13 and 14 twice.

NOTES:

1. Sweater is made in four pieces: Back, Front and 2 Sleeves. Each piece is worked from the lower edge upwards.
2. Back, Front and Sleeves are worked back and forth in rows on circular needle, as if working on straight needles.
3. Neckband is worked in the round.

Next Row (WS): Work Row 2 of Stripe Pattern.
Continue in Stripe Pattern, rep Rows 1-8 until piece measures 15 in. (38 cm) from beg, end with a WS row. Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.

Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 0 (0, 2, 2, 2) rows.

The neck shaping will be completed before the shoulder shaping.
