Felted Ruched Bag
Lion Brand® Fishermen's Wool®
GAUGE: 16 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) before felting. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: Kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.
|
NOTES: 1. Due to the nature of the felting process, the size of your finished Bag may vary.
2. Bag is worked in four separate pieces: Body, Base, and 2 Handles.
3. After all four pieces are knit and felted. The Base is cut to fit the circumference of the Body and then Base is sewn to the Body.
4. Pieces are knit on circular needle to accommodate the large number of sts in Base and Body. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
5. Stitch markers are used to make counting of cast on sts of Base and Body easier.
6. Do not be overly concerned if your st count does not match the pattern exactly. Increasing and decreasing, even if a few sts off, will still create ruching.

BODY
Cast on 230 sts, placing a marker after every 23 sts - 10 groups of 23 sts divided by markers.
Do not join, work back and forth on circular needle, as if working on straight needles. Slip markers on every row.
Rows 1-8: Knit.
Row 9 (Increase Row): Kfb in each st across - 460 sts at the end of this row (10 groups of 46 sts divided by markers).
Rows 10-27: Beg with a purl row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS), without increasing or decreasing.
Row 28 (Decrease Row): (P2tog) across - 230 sts at the end of this row.
Rep Rows 1-28 three more times, then rep Rows 1-8 once more. Bind off.
Sew ends of Body together to form a tube.
BASE
Cast on 150 sts, placing a marker after every 25 sts - 6 groups of 25 sts divided by markers.
Work even in St st (without increasing or decreasing) until piece measures about 30 in. (76 cm) from beg. Bind off.
HANDLES (make 2)
Cast on 14 sts.
Work in St st until piece measures about 28 in. (71 cm) from beg. Bind off.
Note: During the felting process, edges of Handles will roll naturally.
FINISHING Weave in ends.
Felting
Wash pieces by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. To felt additionally, dry by machine on a regular setting until almost dry. Remove from dryer and pull into shape. Allow to dry completely.
Assembly
