Father's Day Cardigan

Lion Brand® Alpine Wool

GAUGE:

14 sts + 20 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.

PATTERN STITCHES
K2, p2 Rib (multiple of 4 sts)
Row 1:
*K2, p2; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: K the knits and p the purls.
Rep Row 2 for K2, p2 Rib.

Body Pattern (multiple of 6 sts)
Row 1 (RS):
*K5, p1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: Purl.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 for Body pattern.
Seed Stitch (over 6 sts) Row 1 (RS): (K1, p1) 3 times.
Row 2: K the purls and p the knits.
Rep Row 2 for Seed st.

NOTES:

1. Cardigan is worked in five pieces, Back, Fronts, and Sleeves.
2. Body is worked in Body Pattern, front bands in Seed st, and lower edge ribbing in K2, p2 Rib.
3. Stitch markers are used to mark Seed st front bands.
4. When instructions indicate to work to last 2 (0, 0, 0, 2) sts, this means that only the smallest and largest sizes will have available sts, the '0' means that for this size there will be no stitches.
5. In some sections of the pattern you will need to do several things at the same time - work in pattern while working decreases and buttonholes, for example. We suggest that you read through the pattern before beginning and highlight these sections for ease in working.

Father's Day Cardigan Reviewed by Linda Spindler on 2014-01-28 ***
I knit this for my husband who is 6'1" and trim. I made a size Large, which I thought would be plenty big since he is a 41 chest. I used size 10 needles, instead of 9. The pattern is very narrow through the upper chest and shoulders. Otherwise, easy to knit.
