13 sc = 8 in. (20.5 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Loop St: Insert hook in indicated st and draw up a loop; form a loop in front of work as follows: Bring working yarn to the front; hold working yarn with finger or thumb of hand holding the hook. Leaving a loop of yarn in the front, bring working yarn to back of work. Insert hook in same st and draw up a loop - 3 loops on hook. Yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook to complete the st and lock the loop in place.

Pillow is crocheted in one piece with Loop sts on one half for the front and single crochet on other half for back.

Ch 35.
Row 1 (WS):
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 34 sts at the end of this row.
Row 2 (RS): Ch 1, turn, Loop St in each sc across.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 until piece measures 20 in. (51 cm) from beg, end with a WS Row. Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
Next Row (RS) (Folding Row): Ch 1, turn, working in back loops only, sc in each sc across.
Back Next Row: Ch 1, turn. Working through both loops, sc in each sc across.
Rep last row until piece measures 40 in. (101.5 cm) from beg.
Fasten off.

FINISHING With RS facing, fold Pillow in half along Folding Row. Sew 2 sides closed, insert pillow form and finish sewing closed.
Note: If desired, sew last side of Pillow closed with a separate strand of yarn. If you want to wash the Pillow, snip this last seam open for easy removal of the pillow form.
Weave in ends.

Loop Stitch Pillow Reviewed by S. Honda on 2014-01-24 ****
I made this for a gift. Being left handed, I had a difficult time with the loop stitch instructions. After ripping out the stitches several times, it doesn't seem like the yarn held up very well (it looks "worn"). I had to find instructions for the stitch elsewhere. Also on the folding row, I used the front loops instead of the back loops. I don't know if I'd make this one again...
