GAUGE: 17 sts + 36 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

YOKE/SLEEVES
Beg at wrist edge of sleeve, cast on 36 sts.
Work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures about 5 1/2 in. (14 cm) from beg. Place marker at each end of last row for placement of back and fronts.
Continue in Garter st until piece measures 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) from markers.
Divide for Neck
K18; join a 2nd ball of yarn and k18. Knit both sets of 18 sts at the same time using separate strands of yarn until piece measures about 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) from beg of neck divide.
Next Row: K18 (for right front yoke), slip 18 sts to a holder (for back yoke); leave yarn attached to back yoke for later use.
Working over 18 right front yoke sts only, k 3 rows.
LEFT FRONT YOKE
Cast on 18 sts (for left front yoke).
K 3 rows.
Join Left Front and Back Yokes
Next Row: Knit across 18 left front yoke sts; using yarn attached to back yoke, knit across back yoke sts (from holder).
Working left front and back yoke sts at the same time, with separate strands of yarn, continue in Garter st until neck opening measures about 5 in. (12.5 cm).
Next (Joining) Row: Join left front yoke to back yoke by knitting across all 36 sts with the same ball of yarn.
Cut 2nd ball of yarn.
Continue in Garter st on these 36 sts until piece measures about 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) from joining row. Place marker at each end of last row for placement of back and fronts.
Work in Garter st until piece measures 5 1/2 in. (14 cm) from markers. Bind off.
BACK
With RS facing, pick up and k43 sts evenly spaced between markers along edge of back yoke.
Work in Garter st for 5 1/4 in. (13.5 cm). Bind off.
FRONTS
With RS facing, pick up and k24 sts evenly spaced along one front yoke edge, between marker and center front yoke edge. Work in Garter st until same length as back. Bind off.
Repeat on other side.
FINISHING
Fold piece in half along shoulders. Sew side and sleeve seams. Weave in ends. |
