GAUGE: 9 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: sk2p - Slip 1 st as if to knit, knit 2 sts together, pass slipped stitch over - 2 sts decreased.
PATTERN STITCH
Twist Cable (worked over 4 sts)
Rnd 1: P1, k2, p1.
Rnd 2: P1, k 2nd st on left needle through back loop (tbl), do not sl from needle, k first st on left needle, sl both sts from needle, p1.
Rnds 3 and 4: Rep Rnd 1.
Rep Rnds 1-4 for Twist Cable pattern.

HAT
Cast on 44 sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles. Place marker for beg of rnd and join, being careful not to twist sts by knitting the first st on left needle.
Work in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures about 2 in. (5 cm) from beg.
Rnd 1: *K1tbl, k5, k1tbl, work Rnd 1 of Twist Cable over next 4 sts, rep from * around.
Rnd 2: *K1tbl, k5, k1tbl, work Rnd 2 of Twist Cable over next 4 sts, rep from * around.
Rnd 3: *K1tbl, p5, k1tbl, work Rnd 3 of Twist Cable over next 4 sts, rep from * around.
Rnd 4: *K1tbl, p5, k1tbl, work Rnd 4 of Twist Cable over next 4 sts, rep from * around.
Rnds 5-12: Rep Rnds 1-4.
Shape Crown
Rnd 13 (Dec Rnd): *K1tbl, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k1tbl, k4; rep from * around - 36 sts.
Rnd 14: *K1tbl, k3, k1tbl, k4; rep from * around.
Rnd 15 (Dec Rnd): *K1tbl, sk2p, k1tbl, p4; rep from * around - 28 sts.
Rnd 16: *K1tbl, k1, k1tbl, p4; rep from * around.
Rnd 17 (Dec Rnd): *Sk2p, k4; rep from * around - 20 sts.
Rnd 18: Knit.
Rnd 19 (Dec Rnd): (K2tog) around - 10 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through sts of last row and pull to gather. Knot tightly to secure.
FINISHING
Weave in ends.

| So quick, easy, and CUTE! I will definitely be making more (including one for myself). I used LB Hometown in Cambridge Tweed and circular and DP size 13 needles. If I wanted the hat to cover ears, I'd add another repeat of rnds 1-4, but it's perfectly fine without them.
