Rectangle Garter Baby Cardigan

Lion Brand® Baby Wool

GAUGE:

16 sts + 32 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

1. Cardigan body is knit in one piece, beginning and ending at center front, working sideways around body.
2. Armhole slits are created by slipping sts to holders.
3. Sleeves are knit separately, then sewn into the armholes.

BODY
Beg at lower edge, cast on 84 (88, 96, 100, 108) sts.
Work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures about 5 1/2 (6 1/2, 7, 7 1/2, 8) in. (14 (16.5, 18, 19, 20.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row. Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row. Garter st is a reversible st, just choose the side you prefer as the RS.

Divide for Armholes
Dividing Row (RS):
K22 (23, 25, 26, 28) and place these sts on a holder for right front; k40 (42, 46, 48, 52) and place these sts on a st holder for back; k remaining 22 (23, 25, 26, 28) sts for left front.

Left Front
Continue in Garter st on 22 (23, 25, 26, 28) left front sts only until piece measures about 4 (4 1/2, 5, 5 1/2, 6) in. (10 (11.5, 12.5, 14, 15) cm) above Dividing Row. Bind off.

Back
Sl the 40 (42, 46, 48, 52) back sts from holder back onto needle.
Continue in Garter st on back sts only until piece measures about 4 (4 1/2, 5, 5 1/2, 6) in. (10 (11.5, 12.5, 14, 15) cm) above Dividing Row. Bind off.

Right Front
Sl the 22 (23, 25, 26, 28) right front sts from holder back onto needle.
Continue in Garter st on right front sts only until piece measures about 4 (4 1/2, 5, 5 1/2, 6) in. (10 (11.5, 12.5, 14, 15) cm) above Dividing Row. Bind off.

SLEEVES (make 2)
Cast on 32 (36, 40, 44, 48) sts.
Work in Garter st until piece measures about 5 1/2 (6 1/2, 7 1/2, 10 1/2, 11) in. (14 (16.5, 19, 26.5, 28) cm) from beg. Bind off.

FINISHING
On body, fold fronts over back. Beg at armhole edge, seam each front to back for about 2 1/2 (2 1/2, 3, 3, 3 1/2) in. (6.5 (6.5, 7.5, 7.5, 9) cm) for shoulders. Fold Sleeves crosswise, seam together the sides opposite fold. With Sleeve seam at underarm, sew Sleeves into armholes. Weave in ends.

Rectangle Garter Baby Cardigan Reviewed by Kirsten on 2011-03-16 ****
Made it and it was easy. I added a single crochet trim to the front edge and neck edge and to the bottom edge a small croceht scallop to finish it off more neatly. I added a loop with that chain at the neck and will add a cute button. I'd make it again.
