GAUGE:
17 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
CARDIGAN BODY
With A, cast on 90 (94, 102, 118) sts.
Knit 5 rows.
Next (Buttonhole) Row: K2, bind off 2 sts for buttonhole, p to last 3 sts, k3.
Next Row: Knit, casting on 2 sts over bound-off sts of previous row.
Keeping first and last 3 sts in Garter st (k every row), and rem sts in St st (k on RS, p on WS), work 18 (19, 23, 27) rows with A, 19 (20, 24, 28) rows with B, then continue with C, AT THE SAME TIME, work 2 more buttonholes: one on Row (9, 11, 13) of A section, one on last row of A section AND when piece measures 5 (5 1/4, 6 1/2, 8) in. (12.5 (13.5, 16.5, 20.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Divide for Fronts and Back
Next Row: K 24 (25, 27, 31) sts and slip to a holder for Right Front, k 42 (44, 48, 56) sts and slip to a holder for Back, k remaining 24 (25, 27, 31) sts for Left Front. Continue on sts for Left Front only.
Continue in St st, keeping the 3 edge sts in Garter St, until piece measures 5 1/4 (5 1/2, 6 1/2, 7 1/2) in. (13 (14, 16.5, 19.5) cm) from beg.
Work a fourth buttonhole row, then work even until piece measures 6 1/4 (6 1/2, 7 1/2, 8 1/2) in. (16 (16.5, 19, 21.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Neck Shaping
Decrease 1 st at neck edge every row until 10 (12, 14, 17) sts remain. Work even until piece measures 9 1/2 (10, 12, 14) in. (24 (25.5, 30.5, 35.5) cm) from beg. Bind off.
Back
With WS facing, slip sts from Back st holder to needle and join yarn. Continue in
St st and color pattern as established until piece measures 8 1/2 (9, 11, 13) in. (24 (25.5, 30.5, 35.5) cm) from beg, end with RS row.
