Cloud White Lace Scarf

Lion Brand« LB Collection« Silk Mohair

GAUGE:

24 sts + 30 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st - 1 st increased.
skp Slip 1 st as if to knit, knit 1, pass slip st over knit st - 1 st decreased.

PATTERN STITCH
Notes:

1. Zigzag Lace pattern can be worked from row by row instructions OR from chart.
2. A yarn over (yo) creates a new loop on your needle and is worked by wrapping the yarn around your right hand needle. Do not use an existing stitch to make a yarn over. The finished yarn over will leave an open space (like an eyelet) in your knitting-that is part of this design.

Zigzag Lace (multiple of 6 sts + 1)
Row 1 (RS):
*Skp, k2, yo, k2; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 2: Purl all sts across the row.
Rows 3-6: Rep Rows 1 and 2.
Row 7: K3, *yo, k2, k2tog, k2; rep from * to last 4 sts, yo, k2, k2tog.
Row 8: Purl all sts across the row.
Rows 9-12: Rep Rows 7 and 8.
Rep Rows 1-12 for Zigzag Lace pattern.

NOTES:

1. Scarf is worked with a Garter st border at each end and along each side of lace sections.
2. After working the first end of Scarf, sts are decreased to work the center section, then increased again to work the remaining end of Scarf. 3. Center section of Scarf is worked entirely in Garter st.
4. At one end of Scarf, sts are divided and then worked separately to create 2 slits, through which opposite end of Scarf can be threaded.

SCARF
Cast on 67 sts.
Work in Garter st (k every row) for 6 rows for border.

First Zigzag Lace End of Scarf
Notes:

1. Work first and last 3 sts of Scarf in Garter st (for side borders) and center 61 sts in Zigzag Lace pattern.
2. As you work Row 1, place a stitch marker between each repeat of the Zigzag Lace pattern.
Next Row: K3, work Row 1 of Zigzag Lace pattern to last 3 sts, k3.

Keeping first and last 3 sts in Garter st, continue in Lacy Zigzag pattern as established until Rows 1-12 of Zigzag Lace pattern have been worked twice (for a total of 24 rows).
Center Section
Next Row (RS):
K3, *skp, k4; rep from * to last 4 sts, k4 - 57 sts at the end of this row.
Work in Garter st until piece measures about 11 1/2 in. (29 cm) from beg.
Next Row: K1, *k2tog; rep from * across - 29 sts at the end of this row.
Work in Garter st until piece measures about 28 1/2 in. (72.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, so that the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
Next Row (RS): K1, *kfb; rep from * across - 57 sts at the end of this row.
Work in Garter st until piece measures about 31 in. (78.5 cm) from beg.
Shape Slits
Note:
Sts are now divided into 3 sections and each section is worked separately to form 2 parallel slits.
Next Row: K21 sts, slip rem 36 sts on a holder.
Working over these 21 sts only, work in Garter st for 3 in. (7.5 cm), end with a RS row.
Slip these 21 sts on a second holder.
Next Row: K15 sts from first holder, leave rem 21 sts on first holder.
Working over these 15 sts only, work in Garter st for 3 in. (7.5 cm), end with a RS row.
Slip these 15 sts on second holder.
Note: You will have 36 sts on the second holder, and 21 sts on the first holder.
Next Row: K21 sts from first holder.
Working over these 21 sts only, work in Garter st for 3 in. (7.5 cm), end with a RS row.
Join Sections Next Row (WS): K21, k36 sts from second holder - 57 sts at the end of this row.
Working over these 57 sts only, work in Garter st until piece measures about 36 in. (91.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Next Row (RS): K4, *yo, k5; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3 - 67 sts at the end of this row.
Next Row: K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3.

Second Zigzag Lace End of Scarf
Note:
As you work next row, place a marker after each rep of the Zigzag Lace pattern.
Next Row: K3, work Row 7 of Zigzag Lace pattern across to last 3 sts, k3.
Keeping first and last 3 sts in Garter st for border, continue in Zigzag Lace pattern as established working Rows 8-12, then rep Rows 1-12 once, Rows 1-6 once more.
Work in Garter st for 6 rows.
Bind off.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.

Cloud White Lace Scarf Reviewed by Mrs Marie Raffio on 2011-03-23 *
This would be a great project for an intermediate knitter, BUT the pattern as written is inaccurate and lacks steps of instruction starting with the slits and ending with errors in creating the second end lace pattern. While I was able to execute the slits, I was disappointed about how much INFERENCE was needed to do so. Also, The second end lace pattern as written does not produce the same effect as the first end.
