12 double crochet + 4 rows = 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Berry Spice Scarf Reviewed by Lori Mattioli on 2013-12-16 *****
Love this pattern - easy, beautiful, stylish! After it was done, I added a sc row over the initial chain so it doesn't feel so taut around the neck. Next time, knowing I will do that, I'll make the 1st row a hdc so it doesn't appear bigger than the other rows (which is only apparent if you do 2 colors like I did). Since I was making this for a glamour girl, I used a sparkly yarn in between each row of homespun (MC). Because it was a smaller yarn, I used a smaller hook for those rows and put 2 hdc into each dc of MC. Because of these extra rows, I only did 3 MC rows, then ended with the sparkly. Rolling it up looks like a rosette, making a beautiful presentation. Can't wait to make more!
