GAUGE:

Approx 20 sts and 22 rows to 4 in (10 cm) over fisherman’s rib pattern. 

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

K1b: knit one below = knit into stitch below next stitch. Sl 1b: slip one below = insert needle into stitch of row below next st as if to knit and slip both loops off needle. K2togb: knit two together below = work next two stitches together as normal, but insert needle first into stitch below second st, then insert needle as normal through front of next st, finish st k2tog as normal. Fisherman’s rib pattern Row 1: knit. Row 2 (RS): k1, (k1b, k1) across row. Row 3: k1b (k1, k1b) across row. Rep row 2 and 3 for pattern.

This is a simple pattern yet a very effective stitch; fisherman's rib is a lovely rib as it is especially pronounced.

Back
Using size 7 (4.5 mm) needles, cast on 85(89:95:101:105) sts and work 14(14:141⁄2:15:15) in/36(36:37:38:38) cm in fisherman’s rib pattern, ending with a row 3.

Shape armholes as follows
Bind off 4(4:4:6:6) sts at beginning of next two rows, then decrease 2 sts at either end of following third row as folls.

Next row: Pattern across three sts, sl 1b, k2togb, pass both loops of sl 1b over, pattern to last 6 sts, sl1b, sl1, sl1b, pass all 5 loops back onto left needle and k3tog (3 sts, 5 loops), pattern to end of row.
Decrease as last row on every following 4th row until 61(63:67:71:75) sts rem.

Work straight until back measures 191⁄2(193⁄4:201⁄2:21:213⁄4) in/ 49(50:52:53:55) cm, ending with a WSR.

Shape neck
Pattern across 11(12:13:15:17) sts, bind off next 39(39:41:41:41) sts, patt across rem sts.
Turn and work on these 11(12:13:15:16) sts for left back neck.
Next row: Patt across row, dec 1 st at neck edge.
Cont on these sts, dec 1 st at neck edge of every row until 6(6:7:8:10) sts rem.
Work straight on these sts until back measures 201⁄2(21:213⁄4:221⁄2:231⁄4) in/52(53:55:57:59) cm from cast-on edge.
Rejoin yarn to right back neck and complete to match left neck, reversing all shaping.

Front
As back.

Sleeves
Using size 7 (4.5 mm) needles, cast on 57(61:65:69:73) sts and work fisherman’s rib pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of 7th(7th:9th :9th:9th) and every foll 8th(8th: 8th:10th:10th) row until there are 73(77:81:85:89) sts, putting each st into fisherman’s rib pattern.

Work straight in fisherman’s rib until sleeve measures approx 12(121⁄2:131⁄4:14:15) in/30(32:34:36:38) cm long.

Shape armholes as follows:
Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next two rows, then decrease 2 sts at either end of following third row as folls:

Next row: Pattern across three sts, sl 1b, k2togb, pass both loops of sl 1b over, pattern to last 6 sts, sl 1b, sl1, sl 1b, pass all 5 loops back onto left needle and k3tog (3 sts, 5 loops), pattern to end of row.
Decrease as last row on every following 4th row until there are 33(35:37:39:43) sts rem.
Work two further rows, then bind off all sts.

Finishing
Sew up shoulder seams, then set in sleeves.
Sew up side seams and underarm seams in one go.
Weave in all ends.
