Broomstick Lace Clutch

Lion Brand« Vanna's Choice®

GAUGE:

5 broomstick sts x 5 rows = 5 in (12.75 cm) using sizing H (5.0 mm) hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

BL - back loop

Clutch panels (make 2)
Row 1 (RS): CH 45, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (44 sc made) Mark row 1 as the bottom row.
Rows 2–3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
Row 4 (Cast on): Do not turn. Extend the loop on your hook and place it onto the pin. Working left to right, *insert the hook in the next BL of sc, yo, and pull up a loop. Extend the loop and place it onto the pin. Rep from * across. (44 loops made)
(Cast off) Remove 4 loops from the pin, insert the hook through the center of all four loops. Ch 1 to secure, work 4 sc into the same sp.
*Remove the next 4 loops from the pin, work 4 sc into the center of all the loops . Rep from * across. (11 broomstick sts made)
Rows 5–7: Rep row 4.
Rows 8–9: CH 1, turn, sc in each sc across. Fasten off.

Finishing
Place the panels with WS tog and bottoms aligned. Attach yarn with a sc through both thicknesses of the sides of the panels. Sc in next the 2 row ends, * work 2 sc around the broomstick loops, ch 2, sc in the next sc row end. Rep from * three times. Sc in the next sc row end. For the corner, Work 3 sc in the next sc row end. Sl st bottom edgings tog. Work as before for the next corner and side except ch 2, then work 2 sc around the broomstick loops.
Sew the button to the front of the clutch between rows 6 and 7.

Clasp: Ch 5, join to form a ring. Ch 1, work 7 sc into the ring and sl st to the beg sc to join (buttonhole made). Ch 18, and with front of clutch facing, sl st into the 5th sc of the Back panel top row (counted from the right edge). Sl st in 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Sl st in the next sc of the buttonhole, ch 11, sk 16 sc of the back panel top row and sl st into the next sc (centered above the button), sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Sl st in the next sc of the buttonhole, ch 18, sl st into the back panel in the 5th sc, counted from the left edge, sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Sl st in the same buttonhole st. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Edging: Work a rnd of sl sts around the clutch opening from the RS. Sl st to the beginning sl st to join the round. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Fabric lining: Measure the inside pocket space of the clutch for the lining, not including the crocheted edgings. Double the height measurement and allow for a ½ in (1 cm) seams on all four sides. Cut a piece of fabric according to your measurements. If using a lightweight fabric, iron fusible interfacing to the WS of the fabric to add support, making it ½ in (1 cm) less on each side. Press and sew the top and bottom seams. Fold the fabric in half with RS tog and sew the side seams. Trim the extra fabric if necessary. Turn RS out and insert the fabric into the clutch. Tack the lining in at the bottom and sides of the purse. Sew the top of the lining to the clutch using an invisible seam.
