GAUGE:

Exact gauge not vital.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc dec) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

BALL:
With A, ch 3. Join with sl st in first ch to form a ring. Place marker for beginning of rnd, move marker up each rnd.
Rnd 1: Work 4 sc in ring, join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc arond - 8 sc.
Rnd 3: Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc 4 times - 12 sc.
Rnd 4: Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc 4 times - 16 sc.
Rnd 5: Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc 4 times - 20 sc.
Rnd 6: Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc 4 times - 24 sc.
Rnd 7: Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc 4 times - 28 sc.
Rnd 8: Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc 4 times - 32 sc.
Rnds 9 - 12: Sc in each sc around

Rnd 16: Sc in 4 sc, skip 1 sc 4 times - 16 sc
Rnd 17: Sc in 3 sc, skip 1 sc 4 times - 12 sc

Place toe end of stocking inside the ball. Fill with filling so you can determine how much is needed. Knot off the stocking so that a ball of the correct size is formed. Remove stocking from inside the ball. Turn the stocking back over the ball so that it is double. Tie again. Repeat until there is no stocking left (typically 4-5 times). This process results in many layers of stocking holding the filling. Put the stocking with the filling inside the ball.

Rnd 18: Sc in 2 sc, skip 1 sc 4 times - 8 sc
Rnd 19: Sc in 1 sc, skip 1 sc 4 times - 4 sc
Rnd 20: Sc in 1 sc, skip 1 sc 2 times - 2 sc
Sc 2 together, fasten off, weave in ends.

FINISHING
Stem

If desired, with B, thread three pieces through the last stitch. Braid approximatey ½ inch (1 cm) and tie off.

Face
If desired, with embroidery thread and embroidery needle, embroider
