Lion Brand® Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick®

6.6 sc and 8 rows = 4" (10 cm) on size N-13 (9 mm) hook When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

The ribbed appearance and stretch comes from crocheting into the back loop of each stitch.

Family of Beanies Reviewed by KAREN on 2015-12-16 *****
This is the pattern I use to make hats for the homeless. I have made approximately 100 adult male hats. I stop increasing when I get to a count of 39 to ensure the hat is large enough. To ensure they stretch they must be crocheted in the back loops, as instructed. I made a few crocheting in both loops and they were too tight. I also striped some and joined each row, which creates a weird seam, which is not desirable. If striping, better to create a candy cane effect.also, you can use two strands of 4-ply, instead of bulky. Too ensure they are warm enough for outdoors, I use one strand of wool. For hats for homeless, I don't worry about whether the wool is washable.
