16 st x 24 rows = 4 in [10 cm.] When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

The piece will shrink while being felted. Check the size after washing and before putting in the dryer -- if it is the size you want, stop at that point and air-dry.

With (A) Cast on 24 stitches.
Row 1
Row 2 and all even rows, purl.
Row 3 Knit into the front and back of the first stitch (K1fb), knit until there is one stitch remaining, K1fb - 26 stitches.
Row 4 Purl
Row 5 Knit into the front and back of the first stitch (K1fb), knit until there is one stitch remaining, K1fb - 28 stitches.
Row 6 Purl
Row 7 Knit 4, change to (B) K20, change to A (we used the yarn from the other end of the skein), K4.
Row 8 Purl 4, change to (B), P20, change to A, P4
Continue until piece measures 8.5 inches, ending on a purl row.
Next row, Knit 2 together (k2tog) and continue with A across until two stitches remain K2tog - 26 stitches
Next row, purl.
Next row K2tog, knit until there are 2 stitches remaining, k2tog.
Bind off all stitches, weave in ends.

Sew bottom and side edges together, leaving final edge open.

Wash by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. To felt additionally, dry by machine on a regular setting until almost dry. Remove from dryer and pull into shape.

When the case is done, press with a steam iron (if necessary) to flatten and shape.

Felted Glasses Case Reviewed by Rebecca Westcott on 2008-11-22 *****
Wonderful "little" find. I also made it to match a felted purse and now everyone I know wants one. Easy to make and as many variations as Lion Brand Wool colors. I also have altered the size for "reading" glasses and even smaller for a pen or pencil holder for purse or brief case.
