This heirloom receiving blanket is sized for newborns or preemies. The pretty lacy edge is very simple to make and a good introduction to lace knitting. Click here for the hat pattern. Perfect for Valentine's Day or any other occasion.

Queen of Hearts lace-edged Newborn Blanket

Lion Brand® Lion® Cashmere Blend

GAUGE:

17 stitches + 25 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) with US #8 (5mm) needles

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

BLANKET
With A, cast on 63 stitches
Rows 1-7 St st beg with a k row

Heart Stripe
Row 8 Change to B, purl
Row 9 *K1 B, k1 A. Repeat from * to end of row.
Row 10 Change to B, purl

Row 11 Change to A, work in St st until piece measures 13” [33cm] from beg, end after a RS row.

Repeat rows 8-10 for Heart stripe

Work 7 rows St st with A.
Bind off. Weave in ends.

Note: The edges of the afghan will be curling under at this stage. Don't worry -- this is normal behavior for stockinette stitch; it will stop when the lace edging is attached.

LACE EDGING
Cast on 5 sts.
Row 1 K 1, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2 - 6 sts
Rows 2, 4 and 6 Knit
Row 3 K 2, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2 - 7 sts
Row 5 K 3, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2 - 8 sts
Row 7 K 4, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2 - 9 sts
Row 8 Bind off 4 sts, k to end – 5 sts.
Repeat rows 1-8 until lace edging is 70 in [178 cm] long. Bind off all sts on last row.

With large-eyed blunt needle, sew lace to blanket, gathering 3” [7.6 cm] of lace at the corners. Join ends of edging. Weave in ends.

Gently press the finished afghan (with steam) so that the lace lies flat.

Queen of Hearts lace-edged Newborn Blanket Reviewed by on 2010-10-26 *****
This turned out beautifully. What a nice pattern. It was easier to do than I expected, but quite time consuming to put the lace on how I wanted it. That said, I made it quite a bit bigger than recommended. All that work, and they can only use it for a month? I wanted them to be able to use it for the first six!
I will be making this again for another expectant mother quite soon.
