Lacy-Edge Heart Potholder

Lion Brand® Lion® Cotton

12 sts x 22 rows (11 ridges) = 4 in [10 cm] in garter stitc When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Potholder is worked with 3 strands of yarn held together throughout. To use one ball, re-roll yarn into three separate balls. (If you hare making more than one potholder, you may find it easier to use three balls of Lion Cotton and eliminate the need for re-rolling.)

With 3 strands of yarn held together, cast on 1 st.
Row 1: K
Row 2: Knit in front and back of the st You now have 2 sts on your needle!

Note: Knitting twice into a stitch (once in front and once in back) of a stitch is a way to do an increase.

  • Knit into the front loop of the next stitch on your left-hand needle as you would normally, pull the loop of the new stitch through but don't remove the stitch from the left needle.
  • Then knit into the back loop of the same stitch so you have two stitches.
  • Finally, slide the original stitch off the left needle.

Row 3: K
Row 4: Knit in front and back of first st, knit to last st, knit in front and back of last st. You now have 4 sts on your needle!
Rows 5-29: Odd numbered Rows, knit
Rows 5-29: Even-numbered rows K1, yo, knit until there is one st remaining, yo, K1. On the next row, knit into the yo (this creates the 'lace' appearance on the edge). On row 28, there are 28 sts on the needle.
Row 30: K, sl1 as if to knit, K, psso. Knit until there are 2 sts remaining; sl1, K, psso.
