Knitted Boat Neck Sweater

GAUGE:

19 sts and 24 rows = 4in. [10 cm.] in St st on size 5 needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Seed St (worked on an odd number of sts): Row 1: *K 1, p 1; rep from * across to last st, k 1. Rep this row for seed st.

SWEATER
BACK:
With size 3 needles, cast on 97 (103, 111, 117, 125, 133) sts. Work in seed st for 2 (2, 2, 2½, 2½, 2½)in.. Change to size 5 needles and St st (K on RS, P on WS). Work until piece measures 16 (17, 17, 17, 17, 17)in. from beg.

Shape armholes: Bind off 5 (5, 5, 6, 6, 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows - 87 (93, 101, 105, 113, 121) sts. Work even until armholes measure 8 (8, 8, 9, 9, 9)in.

Shape neck:
Next Row (RS):
K 24 (27, 31, 31, 35, 39) sts, join another ball of yarn and bind off center 39 (39, 39, 43, 43, 43) sts, k rem 24 (27, 31, 31, 35, 39) sts. Working both sides at the same time with separate balls of yarn, dec 1 st at each neck edge every RS row twice. Work 1 row even or until piece measures 25 (26, 26, 27, 27, 27) in. from beg. Bind off rem 22 (25, 29, 29, 33, 37) sts on each shoulder.

FRONT:
Work same as Back until armholes measure 7 (7, 7, 8, 8, 8) in..

Shape neck:
Next Row (RS):

K 32 (35, 39, 39, 43, 47) sts, place center 23 (23, 23, 27, 27, 27) sts on a holder, join another ball of yarn, k rem 32 (35, 39, 39, 43, 47) sts. Working both sides at the same time with separate balls of yarn, bind off 3 sts at each neck edge once, then 2 sts at same edge every other row twice. Dec 1 st at each neck edge on next 3 RS rows. Work even until piece measures same as Back to shoulders. Bind off rem 22 (25, 29, 29, 33, 37) sts on each shoulder.

SLEEVES:
With size 3 needles, cast on 43 (43, 43, 49, 49, 49) sts. Work in seed st for 2 in.. Change to size 5 needles and St st. Inc 1 st each end every 4th row 22 (22, 22, 23, 23, 23) times – 87 (87, 87, 95, 95, 95) sts. Work even until Sleeve measures 17 (17, 17, 18, 18, 18)in. from beg or desired length to underarm. Mark last row. Work even in St st for 6 (6, 6, 8, 8, 8) rows more. Bind off.

FINISHING:
Sew right shoulder seam.

Neckband: With RS facing and size 3 needles, pick up and k approx 89 (89, 89, 97, 97, 97) sts around neck edge. Work in seed st for 1½in.. Bind off loosely. Sew left shoulder/neckband seam. Place bound-off edge of Sleeve between armhole shaping and sew in place. Sew side and Sleeve seams leaving 2½in. of seed st open at lower edge for slits, if desired.
