GAUGE: Please refer to the PDF for gauge information. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

I didn't use a spool knitter. I had the yarn and was looking for something to do with it. So I read through instructions and I began knitting in the round on dpn's I moved up to a pair of cable needles. It came out great. I wish I could snuggle up in it.
My only problem is the finicky cat! lol He loves bags of plastic and paper, but not this soft one. After a few days I tried to entice my arthritic Yorkie to cuddle up in it. He just wasn't in to it either. I have washed it several times in hopes one of my critters would take to it, but no luck.
If the opening was just a bit smaller it could be a crazy soft hat! lol
