GAUGE:
24 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

I haven't learned to crochet yet and for others like me that see wonderful patterns in crochet format that they'd like to knit, this pattern is very similar to Pattern #: L30117 which is the Canyon Crochet Shrug. I made this one and it is beautiful and quick to make but I used a little heavier yarn (weight 3)because I was concerned it may stretch with wear over time.
