GAUGE:

8 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

Large hook is used to create an open fabric that will easily stretch to fit a range of sizes.

SHRUG
Ch 85.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 84 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working in back loops only, sc in each st across.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures about 38 in. (96.5 cm) from beginning.

FINISHING
Fold piece in half to measure 21 x 38 in. (53.5 x 96.5 cm).
Place markers on each of the 21 in. (53.5 cm) sides, 7 in. (18 cm) below fold for armholes. Seam sides from markers down to lower edge.
Weave in ends.

Simple Shrug Reviewed by Michele C on 2014-05-10 *****
Just tried one of these in Homespun Gothic -- I love the rich, deep purple! A bit tedious, but easy to work the back loops "by feel" and I defined the ends of each row with 2 stitches through both loops. Also experimented a bit with the dimensions (since I'm short-waisted) & I'm pleased with the result. Soft, cozy, drapes nicely; I wear it around the house just to keep comfy in the a/c, but it also really dressed up a plain grey & white sleeveless dress for a fancy luncheon.

Here's the deal (IMO)with the stripes: First, mine is folded as in the photo -- vertical down the back and horizontal for the sleeves & (adjustable width) shawl collar. I think this is most flattering. To get this, you fold down the middle of each stripe with your beginning & ending rows forming the sleeve edges.

To customize, you can reduce the # of chains to begin with, which will shorten the length in the back (as well as the width & collar turnover in the front.) You also can work fewer rows to limit the amount of "batwing" draping between your arms & hips, but the trade-off is a shorter sleeve.

I really couldn't tell for sure until I was done if I'd love it or turn it into a blanket, but I'm so glad I stuck with this that I'm going to try another in Homespun Thick & Quick! PS I had a full skein plus some extra left over.
