Openwork Crochet Hat

GAUGE:

1 1/2 pattern reps = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

Hat is worked in rounds beginning at lower edge. A single crochet edging is worked around the lower edge after body of Hat is complete.

HAT
Ch 56. Taking care not to twist ch; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same ch as join, ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch, ch 5, sk next 3 ch, sc in next ch, *ch 3, sk next 3 ch, sc in next ch, ch 5, sk next 3 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * around to last ch, ch 1, sk last ch; join with sl st in first sc – 7 pattern reps at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, 11 dc in next ch-5 sp (11-dc group made), *sc in center ch of next ch-3 sp, 11 dc in next ch-5 sp; rep from * around to last ch-sp; sk last ch-1 sp, join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 3: Sk first sc, sl st in each of next 3 dc, (sl st, ch 1, sc) in next dc, ch 3, sk next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 5, sk next 7 sts (the last 3 dc of first 11-dc group and the first 4 dc of next 11-dc group), *sc in next dc, ch 3, sk next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 5, sk next 7 sts; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 4: Sk first sc, sl st in next 2 ch, *11 dc in next ch-5 sp, sc through center ch of next ch-3 and into center dc of 11-dc group 2 rnds below; rep from * around; join with sl st in first dc.
Rnds 5-8: Rep last 2 rnds 2 more times.
Shape Crown
Rnd 9: Sl st in each of next 2 dc, (sl st, ch 1, sc) in next dc, ch 3, sk next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 4, sk next 7 sts, *sc in next dc, ch 3, sk next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 4, sk next 7 sts; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 10: Sk first sc, sl st in next ch-3 sp, *7 dc in next ch-4 sp (7-dc group made), sc through center ch of next ch-3 and into center dc of 11-dc group 2 rnds below; rep from * around; join with sl st in first dc.
Rnd 11: Sl st in each of next 3 dc, (sl st, ch 1, sc) in next dc, ch 3, sk next 6 sts, *sc in next dc (this is the center dc of the 7-dc group), ch 3, sk next 7 sts; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 12: Ch 1, *sc in next sc, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 13: Sl st in next dc, (sl st, ch 1, sc) in next dc, ch 2, sk next 2 dc, *sc in next dc, ch 2, sk next 2 dc; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 14: Ch 1, 3 sc in each ch-2 sp around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 15: Ch 1, (sc2tog) around. Fasten off leaving a long tail. Thread tail through last rnd and pull to gather. Knot securely.

FINISHING
Edging
From right side, join yarn with sl st anywhere along lower edge of Hat. Work sc evenly spaced around edge; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

This is a great pattern! I only started crocheting a year ago but this pattern is easier than it seems. I made it in some leftover WoolEase yarn and it came out great. The brim was way too tight so I added 8 ch to the first round. Also on the last round, instead of pulling all the stitches together, I did: ch5, sk 4 st, sl st 4 times in next 4 sts, ch5, sk next 4 st, sc in next st. It made a little "x" and looked nice.
