GAUGE:

16 sts = 4 in. in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st – 1 st increased. STITCH EXPLANATION K2, p2 Rib (multiple of sts) Row 1: *K2, p2; rep from * across. Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts. Rep Row 2 for K2, p2 Rib.

NOTES:

Finishing requires ability to single crochet.

SOCKS (make 2)
Beg at lower edge, cast on 36 sts.
Row 1: K1, p2, work in K2, p2 Rib to last st, k1.
Row 2: P1, work in K2, p2 Rib to last 3 sts, k2, p1.
Rows 3 and 4: Rep Rows 1 and 2.
Change to St st (k on RS, p on WS) and work for about 2 in. (5 cm), end with a WS row.
Shape Heel Slit
Row 1: Bind off 17 sts, k to end.
Row 2: P to end then cast on 17 sts over bound off sts of previous row.

Mini Size ONLY
Work even in St st for about 3 1/2 in. (9 cm), ending with a WS row.
Rep Rows 1-4. Bind off.

Maxi Size ONLY
Work even in St st for about 2 in. (5 cm), ending with a WS row.
Next Row (Inc Row): K1, kfb, k to last 2 sts, kfb, k1 – 38 sts.
Next 7 Rows: Work even in St st.
Rep last 8 rows 7 more times – 52 sts after all incs have been worked. Work even in St st until piece measures about 20 in. (51 cm) from beg. Rep Rows 1-4. Bind off.

FINISHING (both sizes)
Sew seam. With crochet hook, single crochet evenly spaced around heel slit. Weave in ends.
