GAUGE:

18 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

1. Scarf is worked in St st (k on RS, p on WS), with Garter st (k every row) borders.
2. Side edges of Scarf will roll. To help lessen the roll, dampen finished Scarf thoroughly and lay flat to dry, straightening the edges while the fabric is damp.
3. Scarf is knit with two colors throughout; strands of each color yarn will show on WS.

SCARF
With D, cast on 41 sts. Knit 3 rows for border.

Begin Chart
Notes

1. Chart is worked in St st (k on RS, p on WS). The first and last 4 sts of each row are worked in Garter st (k every row) for border. These border sts (4 at each side) are NOT shown on Chart.
2. Markers are placed when working first row of Chart to define the border sts; slip markers on each subsequent row.
3. The Chart is a two color pattern that is repeated along the length of the Scarf. Follow Chart from right to left on RS rows and from left to right on WS rows.
4. To follow Chart, work Rows 1-48, then begin again with Row 1. Continue to repeat Rows 1-48 of Chart.
Row 1: With B, k4 for Garter st (k every row) border, place marker, with B as first color and D as second color, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) following Row 1 of Chart over next 33 sts, place marker, with B, k4 for Garter st border.
Continue as established, working Chart with B as first color and D as second color over center 33 sts and keeping first and last 4 sts in Garter st for border until piece measures 9 in. (23 cm) from beg. Cut D and join A.
With B as first color and A as second color, continue in Chart and Garter st border as established until piece measures about 16 in. (40.5 cm) from beg.
Cut B and join C. With A as first color and C as second color, continue in Chart and Garter st border as established until piece measures about 24 in. (61 cm) from beg.
Cut A and join B. With C as first color and B as second color, continue in Chart and Garter st border as established until piece measures about 28 in. (71 cm) from beg.
Cut C and join A. With A as first color and B as second color, continue in Chart and Garter st border as established until piece measures about 35 in. (89 cm) from beg.
Cut B and join D. With D as first color and A as second color, continue in Chart and Garter st border as established until piece measures about 46 in. (117 cm) from beg.
Cut D and join B. With A as first color and B as second color, continue in Chart and Garter st border as established until piece measures about 51 in. (129.5 cm) from beg.
Cut C and join B. With B as first color and D as second color, continue in Chart and Garter st border as established until piece measures about 59 in. (150 cm) from beg.
Cut B and D; join A and C. With A as first color and C as second color, continue in Chart and Garter st border as established until piece measures about 64 1/2 in. (163.5 cm) from beg.
With C, knit 3 rows for border. Bind off.
