13 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

K2, p2 Rib (worked in the rnd)
Rnd 1:
*K2, p2; rep from * around.
Rep Rnd 1 for K2, p2 Rib.

With circular needle, cast on 60 sts. Join, being careful not to twist. Place marker for beg of rnd. Work in K2, p2 Rib until piece measures 1 1/2 in. (3.5 cm) from beg.
Change to St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) and work until piece measures 5 (7, 9) in. (12.5 (18, 23) cm) from beg.
Shape Crown
Change to double pointed needles when you have too few sts to fit on circular needle.
Rnd 1: *K8, place a marker, k2tog; rep from * around – 54 sts rem at the end of this rnd. Note: Markers placed on Rnd 1 are in addition to beg of rnd marker.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rnd 3: *K to marker, slip marker, k2tog; rep from * around.
Rnd 4: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds until 12 sts rem.
Next Rnd: (K2tog) around – 6 sts rem at the end of this rnd.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail into large-eyed blunt needle and then through sts of last rnd (removing double pointed needles) and pull to gather. Knot securely.

Weave in ends.

Easy pattern, quick knit. Made one for myself and have gotten so many compliments that I decided to make them for friends.
