20 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

K1, p1 Rib (worked in the rnd)
Rnd 1:
*K1, p1; rep from * around.
Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p1 Rib.

With circular needle, cast on 88 sts. Join, being careful not to twist. Place marker for beg of rnd. Work in K1, p1 Rib until piece measures 1 1/2 in. (3.5 cm) from beg.
Next Rnd: *K into front and then back of next st, k43, rep from * once more – 90 sts rem at the end of this row. Change to St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) and work until piece measures 5 (7, 9) in. (12.5 (18, 23) cm) from beg.
Shape Crown
Change to double pointed needles when you have too few sts to fit on circular needle.
Rnd 1: *K8, place a marker, k2tog; rep from * around – 81 sts rem at the end of this rnd. Note: Markers placed on Rnd 1 are in addition to beg of rnd marker.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rnd 3: *K to marker, slip marker, k2tog; rep from * around.
Rnd 4: Knit. Rep last 2 rnds until 18 sts rem.
Next Rnd: (K2tog) around – 9 sts rem at the end of this rnd.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail into large-eyed blunt needle and then through sts of last rnd (removing double pointed needles) and pull to gather. Knot securely.

Weave in ends.

Simply Stockinette Hat Reviewed by Amanda on 2012-12-31 *
This did not turn out anything like the picture. The ribbing is the same width as the rest of the hat, looking like an ordinary toque, fairly tight against my head. Very disappointed as whatever she is wearing looks so pretty and unlike other styles.

When I tried it to 7 inches, it actually turned out to look like the picture for the Camelot Hat pattern, which I do not like.
