Crocheted Tote
Lion Brand® Vanna's Choice®
GAUGE:
14 sts + 19 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in sl st. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES:
1. Strap is made first. The Body of the Tote is then worked in rows along the edges of one end of the Strap. The last row of the Body is joined to the opposite end of the Strap.
2. There is a tendency for slip stitch crochet to become tighter as work progresses. Check your gauge often and adjust your hook size as needed.
STRAP
With larger hook, ch 165. Row 1: Working in front loops only, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 164 sts at the end of this row. Rows 2-6: Ch 1, turn, working in front loops only, sl st in each st across. At end of Row 6, do not fasten off; rotate piece to work across ends of rows on adjoining short end and work 3 sl st evenly spaced; rotate piece and sl st evenly across opposite side of foundation ch; rotate piece and work 3 sl st evenly spaced across remaining short end - 334 sts. Fasten off.
Mark center sl st on one short end. Place a marker on each side of Strap, 36 sts from marked center st. Rep on opposite end of Strap.
Body
Note: Body is worked in rows, with first row worked between the side markers on one end of Strap.
With RS facing and larger hook, join yarn with sl st in one marked side st, ready to work toward end of Strap. Row 1: Ch 1, work in front loops only, sl st in each st to narrow end, across narrow end, and along opposite side to next marked side st - 73 sts at end of this row. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working in front loops only, sl st in each st across.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures 13 in. (33 cm) from beg of Body, end with a RS row. Joining Row: Hold body and Strap with RS together, and top edges of body aligned with marked side sts on unjoined end of Strap; make sure Strap is not twisted. Beg in first st of body and first marked side st of Strap, and working through both thicknesses, *insert hook in front loop of next st of both body and Strap, yarn over and draw loop through both pieces and loop on hook; rep from * to end of Strap, across end, and along opposite side to next marked side st (at top edge of body). Do not fasten off.
FINISHING
Edging

The picture for sure looked really easy, simple and quick to make. As I got to reading the pattern, it was far from easy. So I changed it up quite a bit to make it more simple for myself to create. Its a great bag for going to the library and putting all your books in.
