GAUGE:

14 sts + 22 rnds = 4 in (10 cm) in Stockinette st worked in the rnd (k every rnd).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. The number of sts on your needle will vary from rnd to rnd. Carefully count your sts after each rnd to ensure that you have the correct number of sts.
2. Use different color markers for beg of rnd marker and for pattern repeat markers.

Knitted Cowl Hood Reviewed by Showell on 2012-11-17 *****
A beautiful, easy to knit pattern. However, I would re-name this pattern a shawlette with a cowl neckline. This photo is deceiving. This actually covers your shoulders, with an ample cowl neck warmer, which can be pulled up as a hood. (Great for us teachers who have to be on the playground in the winter months!) This is an easy knit, with enough counting and stitch switches to make it interesting. This is NOT a quick knit, though the end product is very lovely and well worth the time spent.
