GAUGE:
28 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) over Cable Pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st - 1 st increased. 3/3 LC (3 over 3 left cross) Sl 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k3, then k3 from cable needle. sk2p Sl 1 as if to knit, k2tog, pass sl slipped over - 2 sts decreased.
PATTERN STITCH
K2, p2 Rib (worked in the rnd, multiple of 4 sts)
Rnd 1: *K2, p2; rep from * across.
Rep Rnd 1 for K2, p2 Rib.
HAT
Cast on 100 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Work in K2, p2 Rib worked in the rnd until piece measures about 5 in. (12.5 cm) from beg. Inc Rnd (WS): K3, kfb, *k2, kfb; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3 - 132 sts at the end of this rnd. Beg Cable Pattern
Rnds 1 and 2: *K6, p1, k1 tbl, p1, k1 tbl, p1; rep from * around. Rnd 3: *3/3 LC, p1, k1 tbl, p1, k1 tbl, p1; rep from * around. Rnds 4-8: Rep Rnd 1.
Rep Rnds 1-8 until piece measures about9 in. (23 cm) from beg, end with a Rnd 3. Shape Crown
Rnd 1: *K6, p1, sk2p, p1; rep from * around - 108 sts. Rnd 2: *K6, p3; rep from * around. Rnd 3: *K6, p3tog; rep from * around - 84 sts. Rnd 4: *K6, p1; rep from * around. Rnd 5: *K3, k2tog, p3tog, k2tog, k3, p1; rep from * around - 60 sts. Rnd 6: *K4, P1; rep from * around. Rnd 7: *K3, sk2p, k1, k2tog, p1; rep from * around - 42 sts. Rnd 8: *3/3 LC, p1; rep from * around. Rnd 9: *K2tog; rep from * around - 21 sts. Rnd 10: Knit. Rnd 11: *K2tog; rep from * to last st, k1 - 11 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through sts of last rnd and pull to gather. Knot securely.
FINISHING
Weave in ends.

Just finished this hat and it's beautiful. The crown shaping works in nicely with the cable pattern for a smooth transition. I used circular needles as far as possible. Cable pattern is easy to follow with excellent results. Love it...Love it!!!
