GAUGE:

13 sts + 14 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in stitch pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Nine Lives Sweater Reviewed by Susan Cabana on 2011-02-21 ****
I made this sweater for a two year old. After taking her measurements I decided to use a larger crochet hook (J). The pattern was easy to follow. I lengthened the sweater and also lengthened the sleeves so they would fit the little girl I made it for. It just fits her. So I would recommend if you want it to fit a 2-1/2 or 3 year old, you use a larger crochet hook, say K or L and make sure you take the child's measurements ahead of time to adjust the size of your piece. When it was finished, I decided to embellish it with some crochet flowers. I like the way it came out and would make it again.
