GAUGE:

23 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with larger needles and A.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

FINISHING
Note:

Inner block
From fabric, cut 6 squares, each 5 in. (12.5 cm). Using 1/4 in. (6 mm) seams, sew 4 squares together (by hand or machine) to make a strip. Seam ends of strip to make a loop for block sides. Pin, then sew a square to one end of sides. Rep with rem square, leaving one side unseamed for stuffing. Stuff fabric block with fiberfill, then sew rem side closed.
Assembly
Make 1 Block each in A, B, and C as follows:
Sew the 2 St st sides alternately with the 2 Garter Ridge sides to make a strip. Seam ends of strip to make block sides. Fit side strip around inner fabric block. Pin, then sew rem sides to each open end. Weave in ends.
