GAUGE:

6 1/2 sts + 5 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over; yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete st.

STRIPE SEQUENCE
Work *2 rows each with A, B, C, and D; rep from * for Stripe Sequence.

HAT
With A, ch 33.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next ch, *sc in next ch, dc in next ch; rep from * across, end with a dc in last ch – 32 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, *sc in next dc, dc in next sc; rep from * across, change to B in last st. Cut color not in use. Continue to rep Row 2, changing color following Stripe Sequence, until piece measures about 9 in. (23 cm) from beginning. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Draw tail through remaining sts; pull to gather sts together and fasten off. Use remaining tail to seam sides.

SCARF
With A, ch 11.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next ch, *sc in next ch, dc in next ch; rep from * across – 10 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, *sc in next dc, dc in next sc; rep from * across, changing to B in last st. Continue to Rep Row 2, following Stripe Sequence, until piece measures about 50 in. (127 cm) from beginning. Fasten off.
