GAUGE:

Rnds 1-2 of Square = 3 1/2 in. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

COLOR SEQUENCE : Work 1 rnd each using following colors:
Square 1: (make 2) A, B, C, D, A, B, C, D, A, B.
Square 2: (make 4) B, C, D, A, B, C, D, A, B, C.
Square 3: (make 3) C, D, A, B, C, D, A, B, C, D.


SQUARE
Note:
Join new color in a different corner on each round in order to keep piece square.
With A, ch 4, sl st in beg ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, (3 dc in ring, ch 2) 3 times, sl st in top of ch-3. Fasten off.
Rnd 2: Join B with sl st in any ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch-2 sp) 3 times, sl st in top of ch-3. Fasten off.
Rnd 3: Join C with sl st in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in next ch-2 sp, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch-1 sp] 3 times, sl st in top of ch-3. Fasten off.
Rnd 4: Join next color of color sequence with sl st in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in next corner ch-2 sp, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch-1 sp, 3 dc, ch 1 in next ch-1 sp] 3 times, sl st in top of ch-3. Fasten off.
Rnds 5-10: Continue as established, adding one more (3 dc, ch 1) each side every rnd and changing color every rnd according to Color Sequence.

FINISHING
Following Assembly Diagram, sew Squares into 3 strips of 3 Squares each. Seam strips together to make Afghan.
Border
Rnd 1:
Join D with sc in any dc. Sc in each dc and ch-1 sp around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner ch-2 sp. Join with sl st in beg sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same sp, sc in each st around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner ch-2 sp. Join with st st in beg sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Just finished this in the colors suggested on the pattern. It turned out beautiful, but it is a little smaller than I thought it would be. In hindsight, I might add another row, but otherwise it's lovely.
