5 1/2 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k every rnd) with 2 strands of yarn held tog. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

With 2 strands of yarn held tog, cast on 28 sts.
Divide sts onto 3 needles. Place marker for beg of rnd and join, being careful not to twist sts.
Work in St st (k every rnd) until piece measures 5 in. (12.5 cm) from beg.

Redington Hat Reviewed by Dorothy Eggerss on 2011-01-06 **
Somehow that hat does not seem to be stockinette stitch. The edge rolls up if done in stockinette without knitting and purling the first 3 or 4 4rows alternately. The second hat I made by using circular needle and sewing side seam when finished. I knitted every row back and forth and knitted the decreases on the knit rows....worked very well.
