18 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Seed st. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Classic Lace Baby Throw Reviewed by Catherine Agacinski on 2015-03-10 ****
I knit this in one piece on a circular needle. I'm pleased with the finished results and glad that I got it done before my grandchild is born. If I were to do it again, I'd do a swatch of seed stitch to see how many rows equals the 6 stitches on the side borders. My top and bottom borders are shorter than the side borders are wide. I'd also experiment with adding a row of (6 seed stitch, knit to the last 6 stitches, 6 seed stitch) between the bottom border and the main blanket and between the main blanket and the top border. This would set off the border better. The side borders are already defined by the ssk that starts the first lace panel and the k2tog that ends the last lace panel. I'd choose a different yarn, too. My first skein of Cotton-Ease had a knot. The second skein had three knots!
