GAUGE:
11 sc = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Carry unused colors along side of work.

I'm a beginner who has done a few afghans over the years, all very simple. This is definitely a simple afghan that can look really sophisticated depending on the color choice. I chose a different color scheme, and in hindsight, wish I had left it borderless, but overall it is a fabulous first project for a beginner.
