GAUGE:

16 sts + 23 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Seed st. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

4/5 RC (4 over 5 right cross) Sl 5 sts to cable needle and hold to back of work, k4, then k5 from cable needle.
4/5 LC (4 over 5 left cross) Sl 4 sts to cable needle and hold to front of work, k5, then k4 from cable needle.
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop.

PATTERN STITCH
Seed Stitch (over an even number of sts)
Row 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end.
Row 2: K the purl sts and p the knit sts.
Rep Row 2 for Seed st.


HAT
Cast on 76 sts. Work in Seed st until piece measures 4 1/2 in. (11.5 cm) from beg.
Row 1 (RS): K3, M1, *k2, M1; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3 – 112 sts at end of row.
Rows 2-8: Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
Row 9 (RS): K3, *4/5 RC, 4/5 LC, k4; rep from * 3 more times, 4/5 RC, 4/5 LC, k3.
Rows 10-13: Work in St st.
Rep Rows 2-13 twice more.
Next Row: Purl.
Shape Crown
Next (Dec) Row: K7, *(k2tog) twice, k2, (k2tog) twice, k12; rep from * 3 more times, (k2tog) twice, k2, (k2tog) twice, k7 – 92 sts at end of row.
Next Row: Purl.
Next (Dec) Row: K7, *(k3tog) twice, k12; rep from * 3 more times, (k3tog) twice, k7 – 72 sts at end of row.
Next Row: Purl.
Next (Dec) Row: K1, k2tog, *k4, k2tog, k4, (k2tog) twice; rep from * 3 more times, (k4, k2tog) twice, k1 – 57 sts at end of row.
Next Row: Purl.
Next (Dec) Row: K4, *k2tog, k1, k2tog, k6; rep from * 3 more times, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k4 – 47 sts at end of row.
Next Row: Purl.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

FINISHING
Seam sides of Hat. Weave in ends.

I knitted the hat in one day.
It fits well. I am in the process of knitting the scarf. So far I like it.
I am using worsted 4 yarn for each.
