Cavendish Cable Hat

Lion Brand® Alpine Wool

GAUGE:

22 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) over Cable Pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

3/3 LC (3 over 3 left cross) Sl next 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front of work, k3, then k3 from cable needle.

PATTERN STITCH
K2, p2 Rib (multiple of 4 sts)
Row 1 (RS): *K2, p2; rep from *.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K2, p2 Rib.


HAT
Cast on 72 sts. Work in K2, p2 Rib until piece measures 5 in. (12.5 cm) from beg.
Next Row (WS): *P2, p into front and then back of next st (increase made), p1, p into front and then back of next st, rep from * across to last 5 sts, p 2, p into front and then back of next st, p last 2 sts – 99 sts at end of row.
Begin Cable Pattern
Row 1: *k6, (p1, k1 tbl) twice, p1; rep from * across.
Row 2: *k1, (p1 tbl, k1) twice, p6; rep from * across.
Row 3: *3/3 LC, (p1, k1tbl) twice, p1; rep from * across.
Row 4: Rep Row 2.
Rows 5-8: Rep Rows 1 and 2 twice.
Rep Rows 1-8 until piece measures about 9 1/4 in. (23.5 cm) from beg, end with a Row 3.
Shape Crown
Row 1 (WS): *K1, p3tog, k1, p6; rep from * across – 81 sts at end of row.
Row 2: *K6, p1, k1 tbl, p1; rep from * across.
Row 3: *k3tog, p6; rep from * across – 63 sts at end of row.
Row 4: *K6, p1; rep from * across.
Row 5: K1, p1, *p2tog, p3, k1, p3, p2tog, k3tog; rep from * to last 5 sts, p2tog, p3 – 46 sts at end of row.
Row 6: *K4, p1; rep from * to last 6 sts, k5, p1.
Row 7: K1, p5, *k1, p2tog, p1, p3tog, p3; rep from * across – 34 sts at end of row.
Row 8: *3/3 LC, p1; rep from * to last 6 sts, k6.
Row 9: *P2tog; rep from * across – 17 sts at end of row.
Row 10: Knit.
Row 11: *P2tog; rep from * to last st, p1 – 9 sts at end of row.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

FINISHING
Sew seam. Weave in ends.

This pattern is quick, easy and fun. I just made two for my children, but knitted it in the round on circular and then double pointed needles since I don't like seams. The only thing that would make the pattern better is if it was also written for knitting in the round. The children love their hats, and they look great!
